The empathising - systemising theory of autism : implications for education

چکیده

Since communication is always social, it might be more fruitful to think of autism and Asperger’s Syndrome as sharing features in two broad areas: social-communication and narrow interests/repetitive actions. As for distinguishing features, a diagnosis of Asperger’s Syndrome requires that the child spoke on time and has average IQ or above. Today the notion of an autistic spectrum is no longer defined by any sharp separation from ‘normality’ (Wing, 1997). This ‘normal’ distribution of autistic traits is evident in the results from the Autism Spectrum Quotient (or AQ) (Baron-Cohen et al, 2006, 2001c). In the general population, males score slightly (but statistically significantly) higher than females. Since autism spectrum conditions are far more common in males than in females (classic autism occurs in four males for every one female, and AS occurs in nine males for every one female) (Rutter, 1978), this may suggest that the number of autistic traits a person has is linked to a sex-linked biological factor – genetic or hormonal, or both (Baron-Cohen et al, 2005, 2004).

Empathising and systemising in adults with and without Asperger Syndrome.

An experiment was devised to test the empathising-systemising (E-S) theory of autism. Three groups of participants took part in the study: males with Asperger Syndrome (AS) (n = 18), males without AS, (n = 44) and females from the general population (n = 45). Each participant completed two tasks: one that involved empathising and another that involved systemising. On the empathising task, femal...

The extreme male brain theory of autism.

The key mental domains in which sex differences have traditionally been studied are verbal and spatial abilities. In this article I suggest that two neglected dimensions for understanding human sex differences are 'empathising' and 'systemising'. The male brain is a defined psychometrically as those individuals in whom systemising is significantly better than empathising, and the female brain i...

Depth Accessibility Difficulties: An Alternative Conceptualisation of Autism Spectrum Conditions

As a key speaker at the National Autism Conference in London concluded, we still don’t understand what autism actually is (Frith, 2002). Numerous behavioural patterns are associated with the condition(s) and there are various explanations or models of these patterns in the literature. However, it is a characteristic of each existing model that it only explains a specific sub-set of the overall ...

Brief Report: The Effects of Equine-Assisted Activities on the Social Functioning in Children and Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Equine-assisted activities and therapies are increasing in popularity for treatment of ASD symptoms. This research evaluated effects of a 5-week programme of therapeutic riding on social functioning of children/adolescents (N = 15) with ASD. The effectiveness of the programme was evaluated using the autism spectrum quotient, the Vineland Adaptive Behaviour Scale and the empathising and systemis...

Sexuality and Gender Role in Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Case Control Study

The 'extreme male brain theory of autism' describes an extreme male pattern of cognitive traits defined as strong systemising abilities paired with empathising weaknesses in autism spectrum disorder. However, beyond these cognitive traits, clinical observations have suggested an ambiguous gender-typed pattern regarding several sexually dimorphic traits. The aim of the present study was to inves...
